This is a volume of essays by American author Brander Matthews. Matthews is today mostly remembered for his short pieces of speculative fiction, but his essays are also of enduring interest. This volume contains 15 essays on different topics, ranging from contemporary history (1922) over literature to philosophy. They are written in a very accessible style and will interest readers and listeners today as much as they must have interested readers when the book was published in 1922. – Summary by Carolin     [chương_files]

Boy Scouts of Woodcraft Camp

Rate this audiobook

In the early days of Boy Scouts of America, the focus was on building men from the boys. The boys learned honor, discipline, brotherhood, and the many facets of Woodcraft: the skills needed to survive and thrive in the wild. Walter Upton comes to this remote camp eager to put his “book learning” to use. He learns that, though the information in the books has some value, real learning comes from experience in the wilderness and from striving alongside his fellow Scouts. Along the way, he also gets to teach others the importance of character and the hope it brings to the rest of life’s endeavors. (Summary by Keith Salis)     [chương_files]

Seckatary Hawkins, the genial fat boy, is a favorite character with everyone who enjoys the deeds of a very real boy who manages to discover that adventure and mystery are not so very far off for one who looks for them. In Seckatary Hawkins in Cuba, he is embarked on that greatest of adventures, the search for hidden treasure. It is the hoard of old Cazanova in Cuba upon the quest for which young Hawkins is intent, and there are thrills and surprises and laughs aplenty in his narrative of the events encountered. Hawkins accompanies his friend “Link, the Skinny Guy”, into the romantic West Indian island to obtain possession of an inheritance. They find themselves in a nest of mystery and experience ghastly happenings in the Cuban villa where they stay. Ghostly chains rattle, a figure in a portrait moves, a strange old man is caught robbing the house. The treasure map is discovered and the young fellows find that pirate gold may be found but that it is another matter to safely retain it. The climax comes when “Skinny” finds his mother, whom he thought was no longer living. (From the original dust jacket)     [chương_files]

Doctor Dolittle’s Post Office is the exciting third in the series of Hugh Lofting’s Doctor Dolittle books. At the start book, Doctor Dolittle gets help from the sea birds to help to capture a notorious slave trader and free his captives, then organizes the postal service of a small African kingdom, Fantippo, ruled over by King Koko. He does this of course with the help of all his animal friends especially the birds. He discovers a hidden island populated by peace loving creatures, gets thrown into another African jail, invents animal alphabets, and defeats at least two armies.
